Listede
aynı ülkeden iki şehir olan tek ülke Türkiye. Dünya genelinde 100 şehrin
verileri üzerinden çalışma yapıldığını göz önüne alırsak, bu sayısal anlamda
önemli bir başarı. Listenin bize iki önemli mesajı var:
1. İstanbul dünya genelinde
en önemli şehir destinasyonların biri,
2. Antalya Resort Turizm ve Tatil
destinasyonunu olarak en çok ziyaretçiyi alan şehir.
Bununla mutlu olalım , ama fazla da abartmayalım. Zira aynı
listede İstanbul geçen sene ikinci, Antalya altıncı sıradaydı. 2023 yılında ise
İstanbul birinci, Antalya dördüncü sıradaydı. Pandemiden sıyrılan Asya her
geçen yıl Dünya turizmine ağırlığını
koyuyor.
Turizmin her
5. Çin & Asya
Pasifik Stratejisi
Hong Kong , Bangkok, Macau Çinli turistler sayesinde

WHICH LIST IS MORE IMPORTANT?
As in previous years, the international research company Euromonitor has ranked the World's most visited 10 Cities/Destinations. Since the year has not ended and countries have not yet reported their official numbers, there may be slight deviations. However, the list is significant, especially in terms of public interest and attracting media attention, even if it only gives a rough idea.
When two cities from Turkey made the list, it attracted even more attention from the Turkish public. Let’s take a quick look at this ranking, and then we’ll examine another, more important list. The ranking above actually shows the international human traffic to the mentioned cities. This means different types of tourism products are being showcased on this list. As you can see, it includes city destinations, religious centers, sports events, casino tourism, transit passengers, and many other products together. In addition, the visits between nearby destinations are also included in these statistics.
Among the cities, Bangkok, which has recently been in the top spots, remains the only destination with 30 million visitors, despite security concerns, regional competition, and the strengthening of its local currency. Hong Kong benefits from the opening of the Kai Tak Stadium and the Hong Kong International Terminal. Even if only for a few days, people from the region flock to the city. Macau, in 4th place, attracts global attention with its gambling tourism, with 90% of its visitors coming from China and Hong Kong. Mecca, an important religious tourism center, hosted nearly 19 million visitors this year.
Outside of Antalya, all the cities on the list are city destinations. The only resort holiday destination is Antalya, which saw an 8% increase compared to last year. Turkey is the only country with two cities on the list. Considering the data of 100 cities worldwide, this is a significant achievement in numerical terms. There are two key takeaways for us from this list:
-
Istanbul is one of the most important city destinations in the world.
-
Antalya is the city with the most visitors as a resort and holiday destination.
While we can be happy about this, we should not exaggerate. Last year, Istanbul was second, and Antalya was sixth. In 2023, Istanbul was first, and Antalya was fourth. Asia, recovering from the pandemic, is increasingly asserting its dominance in global tourism.
THE BEST 10 TOURISM DESTINATIONS
Now, let’s take a look at another, much more important list. For the past few years, Euromonitor has been conducting a study in collaboration with Lighthouse under the name "The Best Tourism Destinations." In this study, more than 50 indicators under 6 main headings are examined across 100 holiday regions. The main headings are: tourism infrastructure, the economic and commercial efficiency created by tourism, the potential for labor force, the consistency of tourism policies, health and safety potential, and sustainability. The goal is no longer just to increase the number of tourists, but to extend the lifespan of tourism without disrupting the natural balance of destinations, supporting tourists in becoming more conscious, encouraging longer stays, and ensuring more tourists visit. Uncontrolled growth puts great pressure on infrastructure, harms nature, and most importantly, deteriorates the quality of life for locals, which in turn increases local opposition to tourism as it grows.
This list aims to shift the focus of public and tourism interest toward a healthy and sustainable tourism approach. A balanced distribution of tourism and providing vacation opportunities to the local population are among the most important criteria. Orlando, at the top of the list, stands out for these features. In particular, the positive use of artificial intelligence in tourism is on the agenda of many tourism countries. The United Arab Emirates and Singapore are pioneers in this regard.
For several years, no city from Turkey had made it to this list. Since we have mostly focused on the number of incoming tourists, we didn’t really notice this. However, in recent years, both lists have been considered, and the focus has shifted toward the healthiest developing tourism destinations rather than just those with the most tourists. This will become more evident in the coming years. For the first time this year, a city from Turkey made it onto this list: Antalya.
The selection was based on factors such as product diversity, geographical advantages, modern airports, comfortable hotels, services offered to families with children, harmony with nature, and technological readiness. I believe that guest reviews were also taken into consideration.
While this is certainly a reason to be happy, we should focus on maintaining and improving this achievement. It seems clear that tourism can no longer thrive on just sun and sea. We must now shift our focus here. To do this, I suggest developing a strategy that focuses on the following areas, which we have largely ignored until now:
-
Shifting to a value-based tourism model
The world has shifted to the "not many tourists, but the right tourists" model. Antalya has the potential to support this. The model should focus on high-spending products such as long stays, health and wellness, gastronomy, culture, and sports camps. -
Creating a city center brand for Antalya
Cities like Bangkok, Dubai, and Singapore are selling not just "vacations," but "CITY EXPERIENCES." In areas like Kaleiçi, Konyaaltı, and Fener, there’s so much to do. Tourists will be unhappy if they don’t experience the city itself, and the city will be unhappy as well. -
12-Month Tourism can only be achieved by developing sports, congress, and culture tourism
What Orlando has achieved, Antalya can achieve as well. To do this, we need to focus on international events, themed organizations, winter sports camps, gastronomy festivals, tourism and technology fairs, and large environmental-themed events. -
Artificial Intelligence-supported Smart Tourism Management
Whether we want it or not, we have entered this process, and our competitors are ahead of us in this area. There is work to be done in every aspect of tourism. AI-powered tourist flow forecasting, such as weather, flights, events, and price sharing, will open doors to tourists. Smart traffic signals, guided route recommendations, visitor satisfaction surveys, and social media analyses can be processed instantly and turned into actions. -
China & Asia-Pacific Strategy
Hong Kong, Bangkok, and Macau have thrived thanks to Chinese tourists. China is the country that sends the most tourists to the world, with around 250 million tourists. This year, the number of Chinese tourists coming to Antalya was only 10,000. There is a lot to be done in this area. -
Sustainability: The Key to Tourism’s Future
We’ve started, more or less. Green certificates for hotels, environmentally friendly projects, and conscious consumption are topics that will extend our lifespan in tourism. -
Brand Vision for ANTALYA
We’ve had countless meetings and made many decisions, but we still haven’t reached a consensus. Antalya doesn't even have a slogan. With the right moves, Antalya can bring the volume of Bangkok, the smart city vision of Dubai, and the sustainability model of Singapore to the Mediterranean.
First, let’s decide which list we want to be on...
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
